Why should you use coaching as a leadership style?
The business challenges of 2020 and the start to 2021 have been significant. However, all signs currently indicate economic growth and rebalance. As a recruitment company, we forecast that the market will once again become candidate driven; as talent still remains in demand through Q2 and Q3 of 2021.
It is imperative that you engage, drive, encourage and motivate your team.
Today’s article looks at the power of using a coaching model to develop (and retain) your team.
Firstly, it is important to identify the differences between coaching and mentoring.
Coaching vs Mentoring
Coaching is a tool that when used correctly can be an exceptional way to bring a positive solution to problems. Mentoring is where a more experienced individual uses their knowledge to help another develop.
Both powerful things to have in your management armour. However, coaching is a very separate skill; and one that empowers. As a leader, I would ask yourself – do you coach, or do your “coaching sessions” turn into mentoring moments.
Coaching is a skill we need to learn to be effective. If you feel you are trying to coach but becoming more of a mentor – it is back to the drawing board and time to upskill yourself first.
5 reasons why coaching is good for your business.
- Empowerment.
Coaching is a way to effectively support and empower people to be able to identify their own answers and then a means to support them on their path. Within your business, empowering others to self-learn and develop will give you a highly engaged workforce. Undoubtedly – an engaged workforce is a successful one.
2. Inspirational
Reach back into your own previous career, have you ever worked with a line manager who made you want to be better and believe that you could be….
Coaching is all about becoming that person to someone else.
If you can inspire your team, you will make them stronger, and again – lead to more success both for them individually and in your business
3.Independent thinking
We all acknowledge that a team of individuals mirror images of ourselves are unlikely to get us far in life. When we use coaching as a means to support development in a business we allow creative flair. Your people are always your best asset; encouraging different pathways and thought processes is an incredible way to allow your business to mature in ways you may not have considered initially. When commencing a coaching session, try to remove any preconceived ideas you have about how it will end – and instead, move with the flow and support and guide.
4.Communication
Ask more, tell less.
If you can become approachable and improve lines of communication in your business then success is invariably due to follow. Coaches who can question and then listen will enable the lines of conversation to flow – building stronger bonds in your team.
- Positive organisational culture
A coaching style encourages the sense of responsibility and commitment in employees. Do you want an open business where individuals feel free to contribute ideas and new initiatives. If you can master a coaching culture, your staff/team will feel empowered, inspired, and trusted because they feel that leaders believe in them and their skills.
