Top Tips: Graduate Job Search - Signet Resources

Candidates - 8th May 2013

Most students graduate from university with a bitter-sweet feeling, sad to be leaving some of their best experiences behind them but excited and ready to take that next step.

Over the last few years, the headlines have been filled with the unemployment rates of young people and disheartening stories of the struggle many graduates have encountered. But looking through the negative press, jobs do exist in the market – it’s just a matter of persistence and positivity.

We’ve rounded up some top tips from our own consultants to help in a graduate job search:

1. Tell employers about any and all work experience on your CV. You may not feel that the summer you were waitressing is very relevant, but whatever experience you have shows that you have committed to a role and have experience in a working environment.

2. Make sure your CV tells your story – don’t leave any gaps. If you’ve gone travelling, mention it, you want your story to flow.

3. Whatever result you achieved at university, make sure you write it on your CV. Not putting down your grade will make recruiters question whether you finished your degree.

4. Create an engaging personal statement that will stand out from the crowd. Recruiters and potential employers will have a bounty of candidates to choose from. Think about what makes your application different.

5. If you have sent out lots of applications and haven’t heard back from any employers, reassess your strategy. What can you change to create a more positive outcome?
